A How To Pack Guide Before Storing Your Personal Items:

Before you pack up your belongings and head to the nearest storage facility, there are several things renters should familiarize themselves with. One of the most important things to learn is how to pack properly. There is a right way and a wrong way to pack your belongings and with the help of this article, hopefully you will gain a better perspective on getting your belongings ready for storage.
Below are several tips renters should keep in mind as they go through what they should keep and what to discard.

1. Package glass separately- When you are packaging glass, remember to wrap everything individually with paper, or bubble wrap. Place items neatly in a box and label it so it can be easily accessible to you.

2. Make the most use out of your storage space- Make sure you use up space! You are renting the entire unit so why wouldn’t you want to use up every bit of it? Use boxes and work your way from the back to the front.

3. Take apart what can be taken apart- Items that can be broken down should be, in order to make the most use out of your storage unit. Items like: furniture, bikes, gardening equipment, exercise equipment, etc. should be taken apart and properly stored.

4. Do not package food- Try to stay away from packaging food, it is simply a dinner call for rodents and pests.

5. Before you store chemicals, check with the facility and see if they allow that- Some facilities might not allow the storage of chemicals, it is best to ask or check the fine print of your contract to see what they allow.

6. Use lots of newspaper- Make sure you pack everything well! Your storage facility should have packing materials to wrap your breakables in. Wrapping everything well will ensure that there is less of a chance for something to break.

7. Mark boxes clearly- Make sure you mark everything well so you will be able to find it again. Do not carelessly pack fragile items in a hurry, the more time spent on packing, the less of a headache it will be to find things again. Mark on the outside of the box labels like; room of the house the box belongs, contents of box, breakable or not, etc.

8. Stack heaviest items on the bottom- This one is obvious but needs to be stated. Never place your breakables under something heavy.

9. Package clothing separately- When packaging clothing, use mothballs often (the smell is unappealing but it will keep the moths away) and store them in a plastic container that moths cannot chew their way through.

10. Organize cords and electronics- Before you throw all your electronics into a box and seal it up for storage, you should sort through them first. Use colored twist ties to distinguish wires and wrap up wires individually.

Remember that if you pack the right way the first time, it will save hours of frustration for you when it comes time to take things out of storage again!

Are you looking to free up a little extra space in your home? If you are tired of feeling like your things are taking up more space than you would like, perhaps it is time you considered storing some belongings in storage. Storage facilities are great because they allow you to keep all your things but you do not have stare at all the extra unwanted clutter.
Before you start packing your belongings, there are several items we have listed below in order to help you better decide what you should keep and what you could do without.

1. Look through all the extra clothing you have lying around. Holiday decorations are great to keep in storage, doing this is a practical way to free up some space in your closet. Sort through your children’s clothing and decide what few items are important enough to hold on to. Remember that not everything needs to be kept.

2. Toys that children have grown tired of should be donated unless they hold sentimental value to you. Pick out a few toys that you would like to have for keepsakes and donate the rest, it is certain that another child would love to have them just as much as yours did!

3. Over time we tend to collect a lot of possessions: jars, newspapers, magazines, etc. These things are not usually something that needs to be kept, they will just take up a lot of extra space in your storage unit that you are renting.

4. If you have not used something in years perhaps it is time you considered donating it. For example; if you are still holding onto that lamp you got at a garage sale 10 years ago that does not work but you promised yourself that you could get it working again, maybe it is time you trashed it. Remember that every little thing adds up and your tiny storage unit will very quickly shrink once you start moving things in.

5. Ask yourself, “can I live without this?” Most likely the answer will be yes but if by some chance you refuse to let some things go, you should keep those things in storage.

6. If you foresee a future use of something but you just do not have the space or a need for it right now, you should store it. For example; if you are living in an apartment but do not have room for that extra t.v. or lawnmower, but think you might someday- move it into a storage unit.

Storage units are intended to be that little extra space you just do not have at your home. They are not supposed to be a room where you can hoard all the little things you have collected over the years. Remember the six things above and you will have a great start to clearing up some space!

Remove the Clutter from Your Life

Do you sometimes feel as though your life is being taken over by clutter? If you are living in an environment that is stressful and messy, maybe it is time you looked into renting a storage facility.

Storage facilities are a great solution for those looking to de-clutter their lives. There are several items individuals should know before they begin packing everything up in boxes. Before you take a bulldozer through your home and scoop up everything in its path, there are several things you should keep in mind before to help you decide how to start de-cluttering your life!

Below are several items to remember before you sort through your belongings. As you look through the list, really ask yourself if it applies to your life and if it does, by all means do it!

* Sort through old clothing. If you do not foresee yourself ever needing that sweater again, it is probably best to donate it. However, if you could possible need those size five jeans again, you might want to store them. Use your best judgment to determine what stays and what goes.
* Look through kitchen appliances and see what has not been used in a while. If you have not touched that blender or coffee grinder in years, you might want to store it for awhile.

* Look through each room in the house. As you go through each room in your house really sort through what is worthy enough of keeping and what just really is not.

* Decide if it is worthy for; trash, donation or storage. This can be hard since we all grow attached to our things. But if you have five televisions in your home and that sixth one has not been turned on in years it might be time to trash it or donate it. Remember you are trying to “de-clutter” your life so try to hold on to only those things that have a really special meaning to you.

* If you have two of something decide if it is important enough to keep around.

* If you are renting an apartment and have things from a previous house like; lawn and gardening equipment, determine if you will have a need for them later.

* If you see something that you are not using for the time being but might need it later, make the call to keep it in storage. For example, if you are renting and you do not have much lawn maintenance, you might want to hold on to them if you see yourself moving back into a home later.
* Sort through things that your children have grown out of (toys, clothes, etc.) and determine if you would like to keep those as keepsakes. People collect a lot of things so EVERYTHING does not need to be stored. It is smart to look through the things your children have grown out of and determine if you will ever need them again or would like to pass them on to your grandchildren. Remember though that not everything needs to be kept otherwise it would become too overwhelming and you would never be able to fully de-clutter your life!
